Attorney General Michael Mukasey
President Bush will nominate retired federal judge Michael Mukasey to replace Alberto Gonzales. Michael Mukasey is a sixty-six-year-old New Yorker who was the chief judge in Manhattan for several years.
AG Committed to Protecting Telcos Illegal Actions
Michael Mukasey, Bush’s top lawyer says he’s open to compromise in order to hammer out a renewed FISA Bill that will be agreeable to both sides, as long as it includes retroactive immunity for the phone companies that participated in Bush’s warrantless domestic spying program.
So much for compromise!
The hypocrisy of what he speaks is astounding, especially since he’s a lawyer! Or maybe its because he is a lawyer?
“The people we work with need to know that they can be secure in working with us,” he said. “That would introduce the same level of uncertainty that would be introduced by having litigation go on in public…If you tell somebody that you’ve received assurances, but the propriety of your conduct is now up for grabs, that’s not exactly reassuring.”
Maybe, just maybe if Bush and company hadn’t asked these companies to break the law in the first place, we wouldn’t be having these debates as to whether or not further compromise the laws of this country!
