Audie Murphy Pictures and Videos

Not only did Audie Murphy become a war hero during World War II, he became a symbol of the unbreakable American spirit whose legend was only bolstered by his small stature. At 5-feet, 7-inches, and 145-pounds Audie became an unlikely hero and and an even unlikelier movie star after performing acts of bravery during the war that made him known throughout the world.

Audie Murphy
In one of his best-known acts of courage during World War II, Murphy found himself and a weakened unit of 18 other soldiers facing German tanks and infantry near Holtzwihr, France. Murphy sent his men into the woods while he called in coordinates for mortar strikes to an artillery unit until German soldiers were closing in on him.

At that point, Murphy jumped onto a burning tank in danger of exploding at any moment and for the next hour used the tank's .50 caliber machine gun to wage a one-man war against the advancing Germans. He and his unit eventually fended off the German soldiers, and shortly after that Murphy was removed from the front lines and awarded the Medal of Honor.

Murphy's exploits during the war have been documented in his autobiography, To Hell and Back, as well as the movie by the same title. The film, released in 1955, starred Murphy playing himself. It broke from other war movies made at the time by killing off nearly everyone except Murphy himself, which was in keeping with the accuracy of Murphy's experiences. This realism is often attributed to Murphy himself, who felt it was necessary to honor his fallen brothers in arms.
