There’s Something About… Auma (Part 1)

Auma and Ian

In previous  posts we are having conversations about the Obama family. Connections, relatives, marriages and births, as well as deaths. We compare pictures, reread press releases and continue to link people, places, business and history.

This post will have several parts. There will be a something about several people and things, but let us start here first, with Auma Obama. We will begin with what Wikipedia has about Auma first.

Ian Manners had this to say about the night of our election:
Obama win sparks joy in Kenya and around the world | Mail OnlineThe scenes were described to Barack’s brother-in-law, British-based Ian Manners, as he exchanged jubilant telephone calls with family members in Africa.

Mr Manners, who is divorced from the young senator’s sister Auma, said: ‘I was texting Barack’s younger brother Ben all night as he couldn’t get good reception.

‘When I finally got through he told me it was crazy,’ said the 51-year-old.

‘The house was jam-packed with family and friends dancing and singing, while outside it was surrounded by police, simply to handle all the media trying to get a peek.

‘After the result, Barack’s eldest brother Abongo gathered everyone outside and gave a hugely impressive speech about his pride in being Barack’s brother.

‘Then he led everyone in pouring his drink on the ground – a toast to the ancestors, which is a tradition in Kenya.

‘Ben said the joy was like nothing he had ever seen – and the Kenyan government has even declared a public holiday in Barack’s honour for tomorrow.’

Mr Manners said his daughter, Akinyi, aged 11 years – who is close to Barack’s children Malia, aged 10 years, and Natasha, seven – was given special permission to stay up for the festivities.

He said: ‘I spoke to Akinyi on the phone and she was very, very excited. She can’t wait to go to the inauguration.’

Barack Obama’s brother-in-law wants to stand as Conservative candidate – Telegraph

President Obama was a guest at his sister’s wedding to Mr Manners, 56, who runs a luxury marquee hire business, in 1996.

Mr Manners, a lifelong Conservative voter, but not a political activist, said: “This is not a gimmick. I am determined to stand and, if I’m honest, know I’d do better than most of the current crop.

“They are an absolute disgrace, and the public has shown it will no longer tolerate their avarice, arrogance and warped belief that they’re a class apart when it comes to following rules.”

Mr Manners, a former golfing partner of the President, from Warfield, Berkshire, vowed to emulate his famous in-law’s honesty and use his template for dialogue over rhetoric, especially when trying to bring together people of all races.

He was divorced from Auma Obama Manners, with whom he has a daughter, Akinyi, 11, in 2000.

There are 12 different Ian Manners, but we think some may be one and the same. They all look interesting, and the connections fit.
