A community portal about Autism with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder that manifests in delays of "social interaction, language as used in social communication, or symbolic or imaginative play," with "onset prior to age 3 years," according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The ICD-10 also requires symptoms to "manifest before the age of three years." Autism is often not physiologically obvious, in that outward appearance may not indicate a disorder, and diagnosis typically comes from a complete physical and neurological evaluation.

Autism in its many forms continues to affect the lives of children, families, teachers and anyone who comes into contact with those affected.  A dear friend of ours has the most wonderful little boy who was labeled as everything from hyperactive to learning disabled by his teachers until he was finally diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, an “autistic spectrum disorder.”  He lives in his own little magical world that he draws you into - when I play with him, I’m six years old, too, in his perception. I still see him as a brilliant little wizard who has come to bring the light of wisdom to our lives.

The character of Dr. Virginia Dixon on the TV series Grey’s Anatomy is seen as cold and awkward by her colleagues until she shares with them that she has Asperger’s.  Reactive Attachment Disorder has been linked to autism:

It’s likely that you know someone affected with autism or one of the many other disorders that today’s children are affected by or labeled with.  I’m inspired by this project by Tammy Powley, About.com’s Jewelry Making editor. She  created this pair of Silver and Crystal Autism Puzzle Earrings and has shared the instructions on her site.  Click on the image to visit the site:

Which cause is dear to your heart? It might be a fun challenge to create your own Awareness jewelry.  It doesn’t matter if the charity or foundation already has one. The best inspiration often comes from the emotions, so if you’ve been deeply touched by any health or social condition, your creative spirit will give you the perfect design.

Tammy just used a ready-made charm and added meaning to it. Just imagine what those of you who work from scratch with wire, polymer or metal clay, glass or other mediums could come up with!  You could enter your completed project in a contest or simply place the instructions on your website, write a Squidoo lens, advertise - you get the idea.

And to continue the flow of good karma, donate a percentage of your profit to your cause.

Thanks for reading, and be blessed.
