What causes autism????

If we knew what caused it we could cure it.

Many theories:

1. Autism is genetic…runs in the family

2. Autism is caused by a environmental toxins. Many parents of children with autism say that their children have high concentrations of toxins and heavy metals in their system. Many undergo Chelation to remove the metals.

3. The hybrid theory…some believe that there is a genetic predisposition coupled with some breech on the system, such as toxins or heavy metal.

4. Vaccinations — Particularly, MMR. Vacination used to have small amounts of thimerosol which is mercury that acts as a preservative. Many believe that this causes autism. This theory is heavily refuted.

Most researchers believe autism has a genetic basis. It has been shown to run in families. However, although many genes have been linked to autism, nobody has definitively proven a connection. It appears that autism involves numerous genes; it is extremely complex. There is still a lot of research that needs to be done, but genetics seem like the most logical cause of autism.

Other theories mostly involve environmental factors. These theories range from toxins to television to bad parenting to traumatic birth. One increasingly popular theory is that autistic symptoms are caused by allergic reactions to gluten, caseins, or dairy products. This has led many parents to remove these foods from their children’s diet, but there’s no actual evidence that autism is related to these foods.

And then of course there’s the infamous vaccine theory, which just won’t die despite being repeatedly disproven by scientific and epidemiological studies. In the mid-90s, a doctor (who is now stripped of his medical license) falsely claimed that the MMR vaccine leads to autism. Shortly afterwards there was a related theory that thimerosal, a mercury-containing preservative in vaccines, caused autism. Thimerosal has been removed from most vaccines, but autism rates have not decreased. Such theories are widely disregarded by the medical community, fortunately, but many parents and conspiracy theorists are still concerned about the effects of vaccines.

Kg has a lot of good ideas, but he missed one. There is one possible cause for the dramatic rise in autism rates in the last 20 years or so. That is the use of prenatal ultrasound. Look online at the sites linking autism and ultrasound. There have been studies done that show that ultrasound causes changes in the brain similar to that of autism.

The answer to your question is that autism has various causes. If you regard autism as a destination, then there are many paths which lead to that destination. One such path is the genetic one, with scientists now having discovered the first genes which are responsible for causing the brains of people with autism to wire themselves together incorrectly. Another path is brain injury, which can cause the same aberrant wiring pattern that the genes do. Another cause which is under investigation is methylation. – again problems here can cause the brain to dysfunction in the same way as the other two causes.

hope this helps.
