A GPS vehicle tracking unit is a digital device that uses the global positioning system to determine the precise location of person, asset or vehicle. The device itself will provide person, asset or vehicle tracking at regular intervals.
The device itself will store all of the location data within the tracking unit. This allows the data to be stored within the tracking unit, or to be transmitted to a central location database or an internet-connected computer using either a GPRS, SMS, radio, satellite modem which is embedded in the unit. This asset, person or vehicle tracking system allows the assets location to be displayed on a map, either in real time or when analysing the track data using
GPS tracking software.
A GPS vehicle tracking system essentially contains a GPS module that receives the GPS signal and calculates the coordinates. These asset, person and
Vehicle tracking devices are an essential storage system for all data loggers. They have a large memory to store coordinates as well as data pushers that additionally contain a GSM or GPRS modem to transmit this information to a central computer via either SMS or GPRS in the form of IP packets.
The GPRS vehicle tracking devices are especially useful in commercial fleets and are often configured to transmit the location and telemetry input data at a select update rate or even when an event, such as the opening of a door, triggers the unit to transmit data. The live vehicle tracking of commercial fleets is usually taken every one, two or five minute intervals whist the ignition status is on, whereas some vehicle tracking systems combine timed updates with the heading change and triggered updates.
