Minimum liability insurance required in West Virginia: (20/40/10)

In West Virginia, as in most other states in America, you are required to have a minimum amount of liability insurance (that remains in continuous coverage) in order to operate a motor vehicle.

Unlike some other states, West Virginia requires drivers to carry Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist (UM) Bodily Injury Liability coverage of $20,000/$40,000, and Uninsured Property Damage at $10,000 Limit.

For vehicles with only seasonal usage, such as a camper or antique car, it’s only required to be insured during the time of year it’s used. While it’s not being used, you must submit a Seasonal Statement of Insurance, form (WV-4B) to the DMV.

Proof of Insurance

You must carry a proof of insurance in your vehicle at all times. All registered vehicles are subject to random insurance verification by sample or by being stopped by a police officer.

Adequacy of Coverage

20/40/10 is the minimum requirement for auto insurance in West Virginia. Yet this may not be sufficient coverage to properly take care of damage, injury, or valuable assets.
