Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe

In the past 2 months I have seen this car 2 times; Once I was following it on the street about 500 yards from my house, the other time I was having coffee at a cafe just a short walk from my home.  Both times I have been quite excited.  Originally I did not know exactly what kind of car that it was when I saw it, but after some research I figured out that it was a Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe.

What an incredible car!  Now I highly doubt that it was an authentic original since there were only 6 built, but who knows.  There are some very wealthy people in the neigborhood (billionaires), so it might be real, but I doubt it.  Of the 6 cars built, five were built in Italy and the 6th was built in the U.S. between 1964 and 1965.  The U.S. produced car is somewhat of a mystery and actually just turned up in 2001.  The car was found in a storage unit in California after the owner had committed suicide.  It had been “lost” for over 3 decades and the car is estimated to be worth about $4,000,000!  Like all good stories dealing with money, a legal battle is now at the center of this story.

I suspect that if the car is not a real Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe, then it’s a very good replica created by a company called Superformance.  They have undertook, with the help of the original designer to re-create the Shelby Coupe.  It won’t be an exact replica as they’ve changed many things, but the essence of the orginal car lives on in the newer version.  Actually, Road & Track did a story on the Superformance Coupe which will give you more details about the Superformance coupe.
