Automobile Makes and Models General Motors. According to Wikipedia: General Motors Corporation, also known as GM, has been the world's largest automaker since 1931, although it is projected that Toyota Motor Corporation will surpass it in 2007. Founded in 1908, GM today employs about 326,999 people around the world. With global headquarters at the Renaissance Center in Detroit, Michigan, USA, GM manufactures its cars and trucks in 33 countries. In 2005, 9.17 million GM cars and trucks were sold globally under the following brands: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Daewoo (now sold under the Chevrolet and Suzuki brands in the United States, Europe and in some other countries), Holden, Hummer, Oldsmobile (now defunct), Opel, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, Vauxhall. GM operates a finance company, GMAC Financial Services, which offers automotive, residential and commercial financing and insurance. GM's OnStar subsidiary is a vehicle safety, security and information service provider.

General Motors Co. on Thursday named Brian K. Sweeney, a 20-year company veteran, to head its Buick and GMC brands. Sweeney replaces Michael Richards, who abruptly left the company on Dec. 10 after just eight days on the job. DETROIT (Reuters) - The head of GM's <GM.UL> Buick and GMC brands has resigned after only nine days on the job in a continuing shakeup of the automaker's top ranks under Chairman and Chief Executive Ed Whitacre. Michael Richards, 52, was named general manager of Buick GMC on December 1, the same day Whitacre made the surprise announcement that CEO Fritz Henderson had resigned. Richards was the first top executive hired from outside the company after GM's bankruptcy earlier this year. DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Co <GM.UL> has replaced the head of its mass-market Chevrolet brand as the management shake-up continues at the top U.S. automaker. Brent Dewar, a 31-year GM veteran, will retire in April 2010 and serve out the remainder of his career as an adviser to the newly appointed head of North American operations, Mark Reuss. General Motors Co. is getting close to hiring a new chief financial officer, its CEO said Tuesday. The automaker has a good candidate and should have news in two or three weeks, Board Chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre Jr. said in a Web chat with reporters. General Motors Vice President John Smith says GM will wind down operations at Saab and there will be no more attempts to sell the unit after talks with possible buyers failed.
