Rolls-Royce announced the name for its new model series which until now has been known as RR4 or 200EX Concept. The new luxury car will be called the Rolls-Royce Ghost. The company did not release any details of the Rolls Royce Ghost but production will begin later in 2009 on its own dedicated production lineGHOST: Formerly known as the RR4, the Ghost is the new entry-level sedan from Rolls-Royce.
The latest information reveals some of the car's advancements in chassis engineering. One of the trademark traits of a Rolls-Royce is its ability to move gracefully and make acceleration, braking, handling all look effortless. As Rolls-Royce Engineering Director Helmut Riedl puts it, "The driver simply has to point the car in the preferred direction of travel and press the accelerator."
Official photos of the Ghost have not been released, but the car will reportedly look similar to the 200EX. The Ghost is based on mechanical bits from the BMW 7-series (BMW owns Rolls-Royce) but the engine will be a unique twin-turbocharged 6.6 liter V12 good for at least 500 horsepower that will turn the rear wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Pricing has not been announced, but the Ghost is expected to sell for around £170,000, which equates to just over $270,000 -- about $110,000 cheaper than the least-expensive 2010 Phantom.
The air suspension is tuned to be so sensitive that it can detect the movement of a rear passenger from one side of the seat to the other and compensate accordingly. The onboard computer is constantly monitoring various sensors around the car to ensure the best comfort and optimal steering and handling dynamics. The air suspension can also lift or kneel to raise or lower the car by 25mm.
