When choosing a bike rack you need to consider many aspects such as the number and types of bikes you want to transport and your budget, but most importantly you need to ensure that you choose one which will fit your vehicle securely.
If you have a vehicle which has a spare tire mounted on the back such as a Jeep, then a spare tire rack is an excellent choice. The main advantages of this type of rack are the ease of installation and the easy access it provides to your rear cargo area (providing your vehicle has a left to right swinging door).
The Surco BT300 Spare Tire Mount Bike Rack is an easy to install bike rack which can carry up to 3 bikes at the rear of your vehicle. Here, we’ll drill down into some of the features of the BT300 to help determine if it’s the right bike rack for you.
Features of the Surco BT300 Spare Tire Mount Bike Rack

Installation
The Surco BT300 comes in two pieces and is easy to install. The heavy-duty mounting plate stays on your vehicle permanently and the other piece screws onto the mounting plate, this means when you aren’t carrying any bikes you can remove the rack piece and put your tire cover back on, which is pretty nifty.
You need to remove the spare tire from your vehicle to fit the mounting plate, but this is only required to be done for the initial installation.
Security
The Surco BT300 can be secured in two different ways, ensuring that the bike rack will be kept secure. You can use a padlock to lock it down and you can use the supplied locking bolt, which comes supplied with 1 key. Additional spare keys can be purchased from Surco for .
On The Road
Two securing bolts are included to secure your bike frame to the rack; this ensures a tight secure fit. On the road the rack performs really well. The bikes feel solid and secure with no noticeable wobble, so you can relax and enjoy the drive.
Final Thoughts
The Surco BT300 is an excellent bike rack. It’s solid, secure, well designed and easy to install.
On the downside, it doesn’t fit larger spare tires such as off-road tires. However, if you contact Surco they will send you a custom made extension piece for free so it will fit your vehicle.
Overall, the BT300 is highly recommended if you’re looking for a secure and versatile spare tire bike rack for your vehicle.
