Deciding On Offset Printing Is Still An Environmentally Friendly Alternative

While digital printing presses may be getting a lot of the attention in today’s printing marketplace, offset printing is still very commonly used because there are still lots of benefits to be gained from offset that digital printers cannot provide.

Offset printing is a system where the printing ink is transferred from an imaged plate onto a blanket made of rubber and then onto the surface of the material that is being printed. The history of offset presses goes back as far as the 1870s in the United Kingdom, while a later version was created in the USA in the early 1900s.

When you compare it to other styles of printing, offset printing is still best suited for creating large quantities of high quality print in a cost-effective way, and with very little in the way of maintenance or oversight. Some of the most commonly off-set printed products include: newspapers, brochures and books.

The standard for modern offset printing presses utilize CTP (Computer-To-Plate) imaging technology which provides higher quality results than the older systems that use film to image the printing plates. CTP (Computer-To-Plate) allows for the imaging of the printing plates without the need for film, which then eliminates stripping, compositing and other traditional plate-making requirements. CTP (Computer-To-Plate) has been a revolution in the printing industry which has led, in turn, to quicker prepress time, lower labor costs, and higher quality of print.

Some of the advantages to offset-printing include:

-    Consistently high quality reproductions.
-    Printing plates are made quickly and easily, and the plates are more durable.
-    Cost-effective: off-set printing provides the most cost-effective print when large quantities are required.

On the negative side to offset printing is the amount of materials and the time needed to prepare for each print job, which is commonly referred to as ‘make ready’. As a result of this, smaller print jobs are typically being produced digital printing presses.

There are a number of different ways which offset printing presses can be categorized – one of which is how the paper stock is fed into the machine – either Sheet Fed or Web Fed.

-    The term sheet fed describes each individual sheet of paper or paperboard being fed into the printing press one at a time. Typical products that would be produced using this method are smaller run magazines, brochures and general commercial printing.
-    The term web fed describes to the use of paper roll stock that gets fed into the printing press. Common examples of web fed printed products are newspapers, magazines, catalogues and books that exceed 10 to 20 thousand impressions. Web fed presses are well known for their production speed, with some capable of producing 3,000 feet/min. or faster.

An excellent example of a more current offset printing press is the KBA 74 Karat 29” digitally integrated waterless offset press, which is thought of as one of the ‘greenest’ print presses in existence while producing very high print quality.

For a 29” printer of this type, the KBA 74 Karat has a surprisingly small outside dimension (12’-9” long, 7’-3” wide and 7’-0” tall) and all aspects of the press are designed for operator ease and maximum efficiency. For example, the machine holds two cassettes of CTP plates (which is enough to produce ten orders) which get imaged and are automatically changed within the machine.

A complete job change with automated plate change, imaging and inking takes a surprisingly small amount of time (approx. 15 minutes), with no more than approx. 10 make-ready sheets. With a production speed as high as ten thousand sheets each hour, the waterless offset printing plates can produce jobs of up to 100 thousand copies before a plate change is needed.

This press eliminates paper waste, ink sludge, toxic cleaners and chemical developers that are commonly required with offset printing. Through its use of soy based inks, totally waterless printing technology, and inline aqueous based coating, the KBA 74 Karat offers the best quality ‘green’ print solutions you will be able to find anywhere without sacrificing print quality in the least!
