Avandia, sold by the British company GlaxoSmithKline PLC, is a blockbuster medication used to treat Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease. More than 6 million people worldwide have taken the drug, whose U.S. sales topped $2.2 billion last year.

The diabetes drug Avandia has been linked to so many health problems that some have questioned whether or not it should be on the market at all. According to a Reuters report, seniors in the study taking Avandia were more likely to suffer from heart failure, and were more likely to die. The findings prompted the authors of the study to question the continuing use of Avandia.
