A helicopter toppled on its side as it was apparently trying to land at Fairwood Airport (EGFH) in Swansea, Wales (UK). A passenger in the helicopter suffered serious head injuries, while the pilot walked away with only minor injuries. The identities of the two men have not yet been disclosed.
Not much is known about why the helicopter crashed, but the United Kingdom’s Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB), the South Wales Police, and other government agencies will be looking into what happened. What is known is that the helicopter was hovering close to the ground and in the proximity of the helipad at around 2:15 BST on Sunday. Suddenly, the rotor blades hit the ground as the helicopter fell on its side. Parts of the helicopter flew as far away as the airport parking lot.
The helicopter involved in the accident was a Robinson R44 (G-EKKO). This accident was very similar to another R44 that crashed in Australia.
