FAA Air Traffic Control System Changes of the Day: Congress has approved $63.4 billion in funding over the next four years for the Federal Aviation Administration, in a bill that also allows the FAA to upgrade its air traffic control system from radar to more precise GPS technology.
$11 billion of the $63.4 billion authorization will go toward modernizing the air traffic system, with landings at the nation’s 35 busiest airports set to use GPS navigation by 2015. The switch will allow planes to glide in safely with their engines idling, and also take off closer together.
GPS tracking will allow pilots to see the precise locations of other GPS-equipped planes, something they can’t do with current radar technology.
The funding bill also requires the FAA to allow military, commercial and privately-owned unmanned drones access to U.S. airspace that’s currently reserved for manned planes. That policy goes into effect in September of 2015.
