The Samuel Johnson Prize is one of the most prestigious prizes for non-fiction writing. It was founded in 1999 and named after Samuel Johnson. The competition is open to authors of any nationality whose work is published in the UK in English. It recognizes writers on current affairs, history, politics, science, sport, travel, biography, autobiography and the arts. A US warplane has been named after a young soldier from Nottingham who died while on duty in Afghanistan.
