Maverick Viñales and Carmelo Morales crowned Spanish Champions at Jerez

Sunday, 21 November 2010

Miguel Oliveira, Axel Pons and Javier Forés won the races in the final round of the 2010 CEV Buckler, which took place at Jerez on Sunday in front of a crowd of 26,000.

Maverick Viñales and Carmelo Morales crowned Spanish Champions at Jerez

In the 125GP category Maverick Viñales took his first National Championship title at just 15 years of age. He needed to finish second if rival Oliveira won the race, and the Portuguese rider fulfilled his requirement by securing victory as he set an unmatchable pace for his competitors. Viñales started from sixth and on his way up to second position encountered riders such as Alex Rins and Niklas Ajo providing stiff competition, and in the final laps it appeared as if the latter may prove an obstacle too many. However, Viñales managed to pass and thus claimed the title. Oliveira finished the season as vice-Champion despite having won four of the seven races, but his error at Albacete where he failed to finish the race proved to be decisive.

In Moto2 Carmelo Morales employed a cautious strategy in a race in which he needed to finish just 12th to take the title. An early group comprising Rivas, Pons, Ramos and Torres formed, whilst Morales rode between fifth and seventh positions as he maintained a safe approach. Rivas lost contact whilst from behind Silva began to lay down fast laps until he made contact with the leading group. The trio at the front played out a close battle until the final turn, with Axel Pons finally winning his first race in the CEV Buckler ahead of Torres, who ended 2010 as vice-Champion. Morales decided to not enter any battles as he sought the necessary points to ensure his third consecutive National Championship title by finishing the race in seventh, ending the season with both the Spanish and European crowns.

With the Stock Extreme title already decided in favour of Javier Forés, the early leader in the Jerez race was Manel Tirado who took control from two laps in after a great start. The reaction from Forés and Del Amor behind was not found wanting however, as the two overcame Tirado and initiated a fantastic head-to-head battle, one which has repeatedly played out throughout the season. With six laps to go a mechanical problem on Del Amor’s Ducati took him out of the race, handing the reins to Forés who took his sixth win of the year. Finishing second was Barragán, a position which handed him runner-up spot in the Championship in addition to his Privateer Cup achievement, and Tirado placed third in the race.

The 2011 CEV Buckler gets underway at the Jerez Circuit on April 17th next year.
