Bruno Bombshell: He Interviewed a Real Terrorist

Sacha Baron Cohen went on David Letterman's show Tuesday night to make a rare appearance as himself instead of pretend fashion model Bruno. And while talking to Dave, he dropped a bomb about his sure-to-shock movie opening this weekend. He interviewed a real actual terrorist.

Cohen said he wanted to do something in Bruno that hadn't ever been done in a film before. He wanted to show a comedian (himself) interviewing an actual terrorist. According to Cohen, he has a contact in the CIA (WTF?!) who couldn't help him find a terrorist, and finding one to interview proved a difficult task.

"We showed the script -- you know the outline of the script -- to the studio and they said, 'Oh this is great. Who's gonna play the terrorist?' And we said, 'No, we're going to find a real terrorist.'

"Now it's not that easy to find an actual terrorist. In fact your government has been looking for one for about 9 years. There's no craigslist in Beirut for example."

It sounds like Team Bruno caught a break with a lead in Israel's West Bank.

"So eventually after a few months, we found somebody who actually lived in a town that had a terrorist from a pretty nasty group called the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, who are kind of the number 1 suicide bombers out there if you're looking for them.

"And he said 'Yeah, there is a terrorist who lives in my town.' And I said, 'Great, can we interview him? But I'm a little bit scared about reprisal attacks from people in your city.' And he said, 'Don't worry. You know. Everybody loves you. We love the Ali G show.'"

Cohen didn't give away how things went in the interview, but the segment is sure to stand out in a movie that's already controversial. Not only have some gay activists complained that Cohen is perpetuating gay stereotypes with the movie. Editors had to re-cut some scenes and add black bars over exposed body parts to get the rating downgraded from an NC-17 to an R. Also, a scene where Bruno interviews an unwitting Latoya Jackson was cut for the movie's LA screening after Michael Jackson's death, and it is unlikely to be added back before the movie opens.
