Aztec Symbols

I was driving by an elementary school the other day and I was shocked to find it covered in Aztec symbols. I actually made the effort to get out and snap some photos because when I was a boy, everything was red, white and blue, and we had pictures of George Washington. We even perfeormed the play "1776" while dressed in period patriot clothing. Oh dear.  

The San Diego State women's basketball team (4-3) returns to Viejas Arena for a pair of games versus two Southern California foes this week, beginning Tuesday evening against Pepperdine (5-4) at 7 p.m. PT. The Aztecs, after playing four straight contests away from home, will have four of their final five non-conference outings of 2009-10 in San Diego.

The San Diego State women's basketball team, which is receiving votes in both preseason national top 25 polls, will play host to Point Loma Nazarene on Friday at 7 p.m. at Viejas Arena for its only exhibition game prior to the official start of the 2009-10 campaign. Tickets begin at just $4 for general admission seating.  

The 24th-ranked San Diego State men's soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to four with 1-1, double-overtime tie against Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich., on Sunday. Junior Khadim Diouf (Dakar, Senegal) scored for the Aztecs (6-4-5), who outshot the host Spartans (10-4-2), 18-5, including a 6-3 advantage on net.  

San Diego State wide receiver DeMarco Sampson (Chula Vista, Calif.) and quarterback Ryan Lindley (Alpine, Calif.) have been named the Mountain West Conference co-Offensive Players of the Week for their performances in the team's come-from-behind win at Colorado State, the league office announced Monday morning. It is the second such career honor for Lindley, while it is the first for Sampson.  

San Diego State softball head coach Kathy Van Wyk has announced a 53-game spring schedule, highlighted by 23 games (43.4 percent) against teams who made the 2009 NCAA tournament. The Aztecs, who last year finished 33-20 to advance to their second straight trip to the tournament and third in four seasons, will once again play host to three tournaments, including the 20th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic.
