Berlin is the capital of Germany. It served as the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia (1701-1819), the German Empire (1871-1918), the Weimar Republic (1919-1933) and the Third Reich (1933-1945). After 1945, it was divided into East and West Berlin, the East serving as the capital of Eastern Germany. In 1989, the wall dividing East Berlin from West Berlin was torn down, and the city became a unified whole in 1990 with German unification.
