Arsenal's loss to local rivals Tottenham which leaves them in 15th place with only seven points from seven games has become a whole lot worse with news - or more accurately, speculation - that their first-choice right back, Bacary Sagna has suffered an ankle fracture and could be out for a period of months.
The French television channel, Canal Plus claim that Sagna suffered a broken fibula in the challenge with Benoit Assou Ekotto in the 65th minute of the North London derby. Replays showed that the ankle was landed on very heavily and harshly by Sagna as he fell into the billboards, and the Arsenal physio rushed over immediately to treat the 28 year-old. The player signalled urgently that he needed to be substituted, and was then stretchered off to receive further treatment.
The news is yet another blow to Arsenal, whose injury list is long and severe. Key players continue to pick up injuries and miss important games, and thanks to the thin squad Arsenal have, it is the young, inexperienced players who are called upon to step in. Carl Jenkinson replaced Sagna when he was forced off, but at 19, he surely cannot be relied upon against the best players in the Champions League and Premier League.
According to an
injury information website;
The fibula is the smaller of the two bones in the shin, but despite this a fractured fibula is still a relatively serious injury. Whereas a fractured tibia usually takes 6-12 months for a full recovery, a fractured fibula usually takes 9-12 weeks.
Sagna has been lucky so far in his career at Arsenal, having avoided any serious injuries since joining the club in 2007 for around £8 million, playing at least 40 games in every season at the club. However, a fractured fibula will rule him out for a good few months depending on the seriousness of it.
