The rapper, who was a household name in the early 1990s, has followed in the footsteps of many washed up stars looking to reignite their careers. Yup, he's signed on to star in his very own reality series.
The show, naturally named
Hammertime, is scheduled to air on A&E later this year and will focus on the rapper's future and family. Robert Sharenow, senior vice president alternative at A&E told
Reuters:
MC Hammer is an iconic figure in American pop culture, but many people only know him for his music and fashion sense. Now A&E takes an unprecedented look behind his larger-than-life personality and into his life as a devoted husband, father and business entrepreneur."
The series, which will be made up of 11 half-hour episodes, is described as an unscripted version of the Huxtable family from
The Cosby Show and will follow the rapper, his wife of 23-years and their five children as they go about their normal lives in Oakland, Calif.
If you're wondering what Hammer, AKA Stanley Kirk Burrell, has been doing since he disappeared from the music scene, the answer is, not much. He fell into bankruptcy in the late 1990s, became a preacher, attempted to reignite his music career and he continues to run his own label, Oaktown Records. This show should be interesting.
