Why is a sex offender search important?

Sex offenders are everywhere and it’s extremely difficult to find out who they are. The sad thing with sexually triggered crimes such as rape, child sexual abuse and sexual harassment is that the perpetuators may be someone close to you – they could be a neighbor, your best friend or even a member of your immediate family.

We have been left stunned and dazed with stories of sexual abuse in schools, offices and even inside the church or the community we live in.

According to statistics, 2.5 percent of released rapists commit the same crime within three years after their release and are four times more likely to commit sexual offense than those who have yet to be convicted on sexual crimes.

For that reason, running a sex offender search is very important. Conducting a sex offender search is a way to not just protect yourself but also members of your family from sexual maniacs that may be lurking just around the corner – and they may be someone close to you or your family.

In the United States, there’s the Megan’s law aimed at protecting women and children against convicted sexual offenders who are on probation or parole or convicted sexual offenders who have served their respective sentences.

Megan’s Law came into fruition in 1994 when 7-year-old Megan Kanka was raped and murdered by her neighbor Jesse Timmendequas, a twice-convicted pedophile.

Signed in 1996, by then US President Bill Clinton, Megan’s Law compels the state to make private and personal information including residential and office address of convicted sexual offenders, his/her current photograph, height and weight and several identifying characteristics available to the general public.

The Megan Law has four primary notions – to assist the investigations of law enforcement agencies in sexually triggered crimes, to establish solid legal grounds against convicted sexual offenders (in case they commit the same crime), to deter convicted sexual offenders to commit the same crime and to empower ordinary citizens with valuable information.

If you’ll look at it at a different angle, running a sex offender search can also help businesses maintain their reputation. Discrimination aside, a company or a small business that employs a convicted sex offender is bound to be a victim of negative goodwill.

Running a sex offender search is legal and does not contrast with any law or the constitution. Moreover, running a sex offender and criminal record reports type of searchs are necessary and encouraged even by the government and its law enforcement agencies.
