Kick off your summer with a Memorial Day cookout, and finish it off with this festive flag cake. It looks impressive (be prepared for your friends and family to ooh and ah), but it's actually quite simple to make.Want something a little different? Try my patriotic poke cake recipe instead. It's red, white and blue inside and unbelievably moist and tender. The texture is like a tres leches cake. And unlike most poke cakes, this one doesn't use gelatin to get the color.

My husband is the giant brownies fan in the house. He likes the edge servings and I like the insides, so it works out very well!
These came out of a cookbook that I really enjoy: Bar Cookie Bonanza, a 1982 Reiman Publications book. I just love it!
