Baltra Island is also called South Seymour. Baltra is a small flat island located near the center of the Galapagos. Until 1986, Baltra Airport was the only airport serving the Galápagos. Now there are two airports which receive flights from the continent, the other located on San Cristóbal Island. Private planes flying to Galapagos must fly to Baltra as it is the only airport with facilities for planes overnight.

Arriving into Baltra all visitors are immediately transported by bus to one of two docks. The first dock is located in a small bay where the boats cruising Galapagos await passengers. The second is a ferry dock which connects Baltra to the island of Santa Cruz.

Galapagos National Park spokeswoman Vanessa Garcia says that during a visit to the Ecuadorean islands, he offered to speak out publicly for their conservation. Noteworthy species include:

* Galápagos land iguanas, Conolophus, are huge land lizards. They walk very slowly and enjoy baking in the hot sun.
* Marine Iguanas, Amblyrhynchus cristatus, are the only iguanas who in the sea. They are usually darker in color than the land iguanas.
* Galápagos tortoises (Galápagos Giant tortoises), Geochelone elephantopus, are huge ancient turtles.
* Galápagos Green Turtles, Chelonia mydas agassisi, are a subspecies of the traditional green turtle.
* Sea cucumbers are often the cause of environmental battles with fishermen over quotas of this expensive Asian delicacy.
* Flightless Cormorants, Phalacrocorax harrisi, are land locked birds
* Great Frigatebird and Magnificent Frigatebird, puff up their red chests to attract mates.
* Blue-footed Boobies, Sula nebouxii, are popular among visitors for their large blue feet.
* Galápagos Penguins, Spheniscus mendiculus, are the only living tropical penguins in the world
* Waved Albatross, Phoebastria irrorata, is the only living tropical albatross
* Galápagos Hawks, Buteo galapagoensis, are the islands' main scavenger and "environmental police"
