UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today expressed support for a Security Council presidential statement condemning the widespread violation of human rights in Syrian and the use of force against civilians by the country’s security forces.
Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General:
“The world has watched the deteriorating situation in Syria with the most profound concern, but the events of the past few days have been brutally shocking. Once again, I call on President Assad and the Syrian authorities to immediately cease all violence against their people, to fully respect human rights, and implement reforms they have already announced.”
He told reporters that he will do his best “to make an immediate and impartial report” to the Council as “this is in the interest of the whole international community” and urged President Assad to “listen more attentively” to the “many calls from the international community.”
Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General:
“You can count on me that I will do my best to make an immediate and impartial report to the Security Council. This is in the interest of the whole international community. I again urge President Assad, please listen more attentively. There have been many calls from the international community, including from myself, that just continuing like this is not sustainable.”
The Secretary-General stressed that “all killings should be investigated fully, independently and transparently” and “those responsible should be held to account”
Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General:
“All killings should be investigated fully, independently and transparently. Those responsible should be held to account. As I have repeatedly said, the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people must be addressed through an inclusive Syrian-led political process that guarantees fundamental freedoms and rights for all.”
