Booming City with Intriguing History
Bangalore, officially known as Bengaluru, is the capital city of the Indian State Karnataka. The present day Silicon City of India has a rich history, which dates back centuries. It was ruled by many powerful kingdoms, namely the Western Gangas, Cholas, Chalukya-Cholas and Hoysala Empire, chronologically.
The foundation of modern Bangalore was laid in 1537 by Kempe Gowda, who was the vassal of the Vijaynagar Empire. He designed the beautiful city of Bengaluru, and his son erected four watch towers, later. Standing in the heart of the city at present, these watch towers were built to mark city’s boundary.
In 1638, around a century later after its foundation, Bangalore was captured by Shahajirao Bhonsle. Few decades later in 1687, Aurangzeb extended his control over the city and sold it to the Wodeyars. A prominent landmark of the Garden City, Lal Bagh was built by Wodeyars in 1759. Another prominent event of the same year was that the city was given as a jagir to Hyder Ali by Krishnaraja Wodeyar II. Hyder Ali not only fortified the southern fort of the city, but also made Bengaluru an army town.
After the demise of Tipu Sultan in the 1799 Fourth Mysore War, Bangalore, along with the whole kingdom, was given to Krishnaraja Wodeyar III by British. However, due to misrule, British resumed control over the Mysore kingdom in 1831. British gave the city to Wodeyars in 1881, after which it grew into a modern city. By the end of the 19th century, the city not only boasted Cubbon Park, Attara Kacheri and Bangalore Palace, but also modern facilities like telegraph, railways and police.
The rich history is reflected in the historical landmarks of the city, which attract several tourists from India as well as abroad. Tourists can stay at any of the
