For the music fans, Thursday evening was a treat as Chittagong-based cultural organisation Sangeet Bhaban held a show of Rabindranath Tagore’s Bhanga Gaan at the Gulshaan Office of Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC).

To pay tribute to Nobel Laureate Poet Rabindranath Tagore on his 150th birth anniversary, Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre, High Commission of India in Dhaka has arranged yearlong celebrations.

As part of the celebrations, IGCC arranged the evening which featured a two-hour musical show of Tagore’s Bhanga Gaan.

Bhanga Gaan means adapted songs of Tagore from different sources including Hindustani classical music, folk songs and others. Of all the compositions of Tagore, only a handful can be termed as Bhanga Gaan.

Tagore used different aspects of tunes from traditional Bangla folk songs (baul song), Hindustani songs, and even Western songs and composed his own songs based on these tunes. This has not only enriched Tagore’s own songs but has also endowed a unique quality to the music of Bengal.

On the occasion of Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary, Sangeet Bhaban, Chittagong produced two special productions- Rabindranather Bhanga Gaan and Bangladeshe Rabindranath with which the organisation traveled in and outside the country last year.

Rabindranather Bhanga Gaan, an attempt to bring out the inspirations in Tagore songs was a praiseworthy performance because of the variety of songs that the poet wrote.

During the performance, the artistes of the organisation performed songs like Jodi tor daak shune keu na ashe, Bhenge mor ghorer chabi, Jhoro jhoro bohichhey dhara, Ami kothay pabo tare amar moner manush je re and so on.

The artistes of the musical show began the soiree with the pure classical, went on to the semi-classical and folk songs, then in popular numbers, and wrapped up with a Scottish ballad.

Since its inception in 2010, IGCC has been working with a view to strengthening ties between the two countries through arranging cultural programmes.

The organisers are optimistic to arrange a similar kind of programme in future.
