When it comes to elections I always look at a candidate’s record. What legislation did he or she sponsor? Where does he or she stand on issues I care about? While I never found a candidate that I could agree one hundred per cent with, while I never found someone without some flaws, I pride myself on voting only after I do an exhaustive study of those running. As a result, I have at times gone outside of my party when I felt another candidate was better. As I look through Obama’s record of accomplishments I come up with an almost empty page. What ... SEVERS HEAD OF GOP SERPENT (Nov. 4, USA) We elected a new President today and in the process may have exorcised demons – some who have plagued our history for centuries – others significantly younger but no less destructive and divisive. Perhaps the Electoral College drubbing of Republican John McCain and the modest but meaningful Democratic gains in Congress, do signify a collective maturity beyond the obvious. In spite of our history of Republican governors, Massachusetts is one of those states that can always be counted on to vote Democratic in the national elections. That has freed up many of us up to "vote our consciences" without fear of jinxing the Democratic candidate, but has also sometimes had an enervating effect on progressives using the electoral system to organize. I did see that start to change during the Deval Patrick campaign. The opportunity to have a Black governor was too good for many to pass up. Through the years I've mostly voted Democratic, but I can't say I've been a great ... Read Full Story

The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream By Barack Obama - I wasn't expecting a whole lot from The Audacity of Hope by Senator Barack Obama . I thought it would be a lengthy stump speech, worth knowing but no revelations. What I found, however was a thoughtful plan, mapping out a direction for restoring common sense into the political process. Obama is a well-spoken, well-written, humble man who really knows how to articulate a message. Senator Barack Obama uses personal anecdote, history, Constitutional interpretation, and a healthy respect for the expertise of others in building a cohesive platform for success. ... Read Full Story
