Interesting facts about Barcelona
If you have decided to visit Barcelona, you have an amazing taste. Barcelona is a very elegant city with a lot of art. This city is famous for its impressive history, culture, monuments, fantastic architecture, museums, galleries and interesting people. Of course you can say a lot about Barcelona but I will list 13 most interesting and unique facts about the Catalan Capital.
Fact 1
There are two legends about Barcelona, one says that the city was opened by Hercules 400 years before Rome was built. The other legend says that city was built by Hamilcar Barca who was Hannibal’s father.

Barcelona is a centre of modern architecture. Especially it is famous for Antoní Gaudí’s creations. Some of the most famous are Case Vicens, Palau Güell, Cottage Teresianas, Church of Colònia Güell, Casa Calvet, Casa Batlló, Casa Milà, Park Güell and Sagrada Família.

One of the most significant Gaudí creations is Sagrada Familia which is still under construction. The Cathedral’s building process started in 1882 and Gaudí was working on it for more than 40 years and the last 15 years of his life was spent on this project.

Saint George Day is a national Catalan holiday; in Catalan it is called «Diada de Sant Jordi». It is celebrated on 23d of April, whereby couples give gifts of roses and books to each other. UNESCO got inspired by this event and named it an International Book Day.

The life centre of Barcelona is La Rambla street. There are many restaurants with Spanish food and shops with souvenirs. There are 150000 people taking a walk along the street every day. In other words it is a heart of the city.

The Gothic area, the Barri Gotic is a centre of Barcelona. There are many building which were built in Middle Ages and this location is popular among tourists, which receives more than a million visitors every day.

One of the most pedestrian streets in Barcelona is Portal de l`Angel. It is situated near Placa Catalunya. There are over 3500 people walking this route every hour!

FC Barcelona is a famous sport club in Barcelona which is most popular for its football team. The club has their own stadium with capacity for 100000 people, which is the biggest stadium in Europe. It is also one of the most visited places in Barcelona.

The wax museum of Barcelona has the official name of «Museu de Cera», and is an answer to London’s wax museum. It is located in an old 19th century building that is not far from the port.

First beach in Barcelona appeared only 19 years ago, there was no beach before Olympic Games in 1992. Nowadays beaches are covering 4,5 km of the coastline.
