Diane Von Furstenberg and Barry Diller Live Apart

Legendary designer Diane Von Furstenberg is on the cover of Town and Country (in a special issue themed "Wonder Women") this month, and the designer went on the record about her unconventional family life. Von Furstenberg, who was once married to a German prince whose name she kept, married media mogul Barry Diller in 2001. The marriage surprised many, as Diller was commonly thought to be gay.

Von Furstenberg had this to say of the marriage:
Barry respects me so much. We don't live together during the week, although we go out together. I live on top of my shop; he lives at the Carlyle hotel. It doesn't feel strange at all. I just need a bit of space. If I can't be alone a little bit, then I lose myself--and I cannot lose myself.
Von Furstenberg's independent streak is what sparked her career. When, in her twenties, she discovered she was pregnant, she moved to the US to marry the child's father--but not before gathering a set of sample textiles in the hopes of selling her own designs stateside. A few years later, Von Furstenberg was one of the most ubiquitous designers of the 1970s.
