He has since become, along with Superman and Spider-Man, one of the world's most recognized superheroes. Batman was co-created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, although only Kane receives official credit for the character. Batman's secret identity is Bruce Wayne, a billionaire industrialist, playboy, and philanthropist. Witnessing the murder of his parents as a child leads him to train himself to the peak of physical and intellectual perfection, don a bat -themed costume, and fight crime. Unlike most superheroes, he does not possess superhuman powers or abilities; he makes use of intellect, detective skills, science and technology, wealth, physical prowess, and intimidation in his war on crime.

The Dark Knight: Stars reveal truth about working with Heath Ledger

HEATH LEDGER's co-stars have revealed that the late actor was a doting dad to two-year-old daughter Matilda on the set of Batman sequel The Dark Knight.

Gary Oldman, who plays Lieutenant Jim Gordon, said: "Because he died, people want a dark story (that) he was so obsessed with his character, he was so contaminated by the Joker and he couldn't sleep and all of that stuff."

He told reporters: "In between takes he would sit on the kerb-side and smoke a cigarette, and laugh and talk about his daughter Matilda. I thought he was just a beautiful kid. I thought he was just wonderful. I had a real affection for him."

Ledger, (pictured), who died aged 28 in January from an accidental drugs overdose, often talked to the cast about his daughter with girlfriend Michelle Williams. "Heath showed me pictures of (Matilda)," said co-star Aaron Eckhart, who plays Gotham district attorney Harvey Dent. "He would come in and say she did this and she did that."

Ledger plays anarchic archvillain the Joker, with Christian Bale in the role of Batman. The movie is released in the USA on July 18 and in the UK on July 25.
