SUCH is the level of desperation for details on this year's superhero releases that fans have now turned to scrutinising the tie-in toys in the hope that they mirror what will end up on screen.

In the case of The Dark Knight Rises, there don't seem to be too many worries as director Christopher Nolan has gained the trust of most online obsessives with his take on Batman.

But there have been criticisms of the voice of Tom Hardy's Bane which was muffled by the character's mask in the trailer.

Hardy talked to MTV at the LA premiere of his upcoming This Means War, putting to rest if he was concerned about the clarity of his dialogue in Nolan's final Bat-chapter.

He said: "Not at all. I trust Christopher Nolan implicitly. I'm not worried at all about people understanding him mumbling away."

"But I have seen some brilliant stuff online," he said, adding that he enjoyed comments such as 'Batman doesn't beat up retards' and found them "very funny".

On the opposite coast in New York, at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema, Gary Oldman (pictured above) also saw questions inevitably turn to The Dark Knight Rises, in which he plays Commissioner Gordon.

Initially, the actor was a bit guarded: "There's an emotional scene coming up in the next Batman, which I am obviously, absolutely sworn to secrecy about. They would kill me. Well, I'd do the press junket and then they'd kill me."

But he relented and offered some insight about the powerful performance turned in by co-star Michael Caine.

"Watching Michael Caine work, as Alfred, was a great lesson for me. Just focus, concentration," Gary added, marveling at the Caine's delivery. "He had this emotional scene. I'm kidding you not. It was tears and the whole thing. It's just extraordinary, you get inspired by it."

Here's to hoping that the pay-off matches the build-up. The Dark Knight Rises comes crashing into UK and US theaters on July 20.
