Hohenschwangau Castle

The present castle, where King Ludwig II of Bavaria spent his childhood has been built during the reign of his father Maximilian of Bavaria , who in 1832 commissioned the renovation of medieval ruins of former castle Schwanstein. The new building followed the neo-ghotic style of Domenico Quaglio.
The works were finished in 1937, and Schloss Hohenschwangau became the official summer residence of king Maximilian , his wife Marie and two sons Ludwig and Otto ( later Otto I of Bavaria).
After death of his father in 1864 Ludwig became the next King of Bavaria, and later started to build his own castle nearby, the famous Neuschwanstein.
