Macadamia Natural Oil Rejuvenating Shampoo

Having had such a  good experience with Macadamia Natural Oil Reviving Curl Cream, which  gives a lovely light bounce to curly tresses imparting mostly (certainly not entirely, but definitely mostly) nourishing natural ingredients, I was looking forward to trying Macadamia Natural Oil’s shampoo and conditioner. Sadly, the experience hasn’t quite lived up to my expectations.

Like the leave-in styling cream, the Macadamia Natural Oil Moisturizing Rinse ($16) and the Rejuvenating Shampoo ($12.91) play nice with curly hair. These are not curl tamers – they give a light bounce and definition to curls, so that you learn to love them. However, I think the shampoo and conditioner are more suited to greasier locks than mine, as I found them a little drying and the Moisturizing Rinse, billed as a daily conditioner that detangles, did not detangle my hair nest at all.

Although the performance, at least for me, wasn’t optimal, it certainly wasn’t bad. Mostly, I was disappointed by the ingredients, especially in the Rejuvenating Shampoo. It is becoming increasingly unusual to encounter sulfates in shampoos that take themselves seriously, so I was surprised to find that the second ingredient is sodium laureth sulfate. Albeit the gentler sibling of lauryl sulfate, laureth may still irritate and in Germany, a product cannot be labeled ‘natural’ if it contains any members of the sulfate family (lauryl, laureth, or ammonium).

Another common shampoo ingredient that I would prefer avoid is cocamide DEA. Many people oppose using this ingredient in cosmetic products because studies on rats have shown that it can lead to the formation of nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic. Research has also demonstrated it to be a mild dermal irritant and sensitizer. However, the CIR Expert Panel has concluded that as long as cocamide DEA isn’t included in any products containing nitrosating agents, carcinogenic nitrosamines will not form. Disodium laureth sulfosuccinate is another ingredient that has the nitrosamine link to cancer, although it is considered gentle. The fact that it is used in car washes and engine degreasers does not endear it to me.

Although I like the linseed and argan oils, plus green tea in addition to the eponymous macadamia, they feel a little overwhelmed by these standard detergents and surfactants. Not to mention, the odd paraben, fragrance and Hydroxyisohexl 3 Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde, a known irritant, the toxin triethanolamine and Alpha Isomethyl Ionone, an allergan  whose use is actually restricted by the International Fragrance Association.

Much as I wanted to like Macadamia (and I will keep using the cream styler), I have returned to Nutra-Lift’s Simply Superb Goat Milk Shampoo and Shielo’s conditioner, for ingredients that do much more good than harm.
