Homemade Memory Foam Platform Bed Project

You hear quite a bit about memory foam (MF) these days. Exaggerations from it being a miracle cure to the odors being toxic. One thing is certain. Memory foam beds are here to stay. Who benefits the most from these beds? People like me who used to wake up in the morning with lower back pain, the kind of back pain that was caused by sleeping on a bad mattress.

Despite what many believe, a bad mattress can be the cause of lower back pain, especially as we grow older. Year after year my lower back pain increased every morning. I could not figure why. I did no heavy lifting that was damaging to my back and I worked in an office environment. Eventually I discovered the cause, a conventional mattress that had a very slight concave bowl-like shape to it.

I was determined to try one of these foam beds but the cost was too high for me. Thousands of dollars for just a piece of foam. I could not understand why they were so expensive. Since I was always the type to look for bargains and do-it-yourself ideas, I did a little research and found out I could make one myself and save thousands of dollars. Not manufacture the foam mind you, but buy the separate layers of foam from wholesalers.

This visco elastic foam has been around for a long time now, no one has the monopoly on quality memory foam, and today there many reputable manufacturers selling this space-age foam at wholesale prices to the public. You just need to educate yourself a bit to make sure you buy the right kind.

The layers you will need to put together your own mattress are as follows: A firm bottom layer of conventional foam at least four inches thick. A layer of egg crate foam (convoluted foam), also made of conventional foam, for air ventilation. A layer of MF at least 3 inches thick with a density of at least 5 pounds per cubic feet. In addition a second layer of MF could be placed on top, like a 2 inch thick 3-4 pounds per cubic foot layer. This last layer is optional and dependent of personal preference.

Finally, you need a rigid, solid platform bed frame for a memory foam mattress. This is crucial for the mattress to perform properly and extend its life. My little foam bed project cost me a total of $600 which included the visco elastic foam mattress and platform frame. If I had purchased a bed of similar quality at a retail store I could have easily spent over $2,000.
