Beer drinking in Japan is on the decline as many younger people are switching to wine and other drinks. Kirin and Suntory also recently announced that they are planning a merger (Suntory is the third largest brewery in Japan). Not sure if this a good thing for the Japanese beer market as, let’s face the top breweries tend to make a “generic” product anyway, will this give them the incentive ... Read Full Story

For today’s work of art we revisit the Victorian Era, when most large households included a home brewery. The artist is Frederick Daniel Hardy and his painting is entitled Home Brewed Ale. Hardy was born in 1826 or 27 and lived until 1911. Born in Windsor, England, he was originally a musician for Queen Victoria before [...]

The New Orleans Saints are about to kick off, so I figured I'd give us all a thread to comment on the polls, which aren't complete until the BCS-lady sings later this afternoon. I will refrain from comment on the farce I saw in Bryant Denny Stadium. All I can say is that I saw a fine effort from two fine football teams yesterday. It's a shame that the efforts of two teams were overshadowed by factors that had nothing to do with what went on...

A look at three fresh hop delights from a trio of top-notch Oregon breweries by David Kirkpatrick Every year, I look forward to the release of Hale's O'Brien's Harvest Ale. This Seattle-based brewery first made the fresh hop ale more than 20 years ago, and its arrival in Boise is much anticipated. They also brew several beers that apparently undergo méthode champenoise (proper champagne-style disgorgement); their Bière Brut and Brut Noir being the most available...

Knut mocked me. I have never been mocked by a Norwegian. It stung. But Lew had me thinking. It pours the orange amber of Syracuse Pale Ale or London Special Ale. On the sniff, a whiff of mute orange and spice. In the gaping maw, it's a bit like a craft beer as seen through the wrong end of binoculars. Flavours are there but they are so tiny, like people seen out an aircraft window during take-off. The finish has a slightly drying yet slightly...
