What are the stressed syllables in this short poem? 10 points!?
Try saying some of the individual words in the poem out loud and listening to which syllables your voice naturally stresses.
Do you say BUL let or bul LET?
Do you say BE cause or be CAUSE?
Do you say FLAT ten or flat TEN?
Once you’ve learned to hear the stresses in single words, try reading the poem aloud one line at a time. There are eight syllables in each line. Do you hear a regular rhythm, a regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables? Listen for one of these two patterns:
da DUM da DUM da DUM da DUM
DUM da DUM da DUM da DUM da
Which of those fits the way you naturally say each line? If you’re not sure, try saying a line both ways. You’ll hear that one sounds right and the other sounds wrong:
i SHOOT the HIP po POT a MUS
I shoot THE hip PO pot A mus
