Belo Horizonte Brazil
Belo Horizonte is in Brazil and is one of the largest cities in the world. Belo Horizonte has a population of over 2,000,000.
Vila Velha
It's been a ridiculously busy couple of days, so I have some catching up to do!Wednesday Eric, Sidnei, Felipe and I all went to Vila Velha to do some car shopping and then to go to the beach (Praia da Costa). By the time we walked to the beach it was pretty late, but that did not stop Sidnei and Felipe from diving in to the cold ocean water. The beach itself is very beautiful, and I took many pictures. Eric was in a bad mood most of the day but improved greatly once we were at the beach. It's difficult to stay grumpy in the midsts of such beauty!! We walked up and down the beach, Felipe met a friend of his, and we had a small pizza for dinner and some drinks. We continued our romp around the beach, stopping only to admire the football players playing in the sand, and caught a bus back home around 10:00pm.
We arrived home around midnight, and I proceeded to begin packing for my 8 hour bus ride to Belo Horizonte to visit another friend named Felipe as well. I did not get a lot of sleep unfortunately - something I am still feeling the ramifications of.So, Thursday morning Sidnei and I took a bus to the main bus terminal in Vitoria and arrived about 45 minutes early. He hung around with me until my bus arrived, and I hugged him and thanked him for helping me to get to the bus station and helping me out. There is no way I would have found the station without his help.
The bus to Belo Horizonte was very nice - spacious seating, air conditioning, and a friendly driver (though he did not speak a word of English). The scenery throughout the drive was simply breathtaking. Eight hours of small farms perched precariously on the edges of steep sloping hills, cattle pastures, small towns sprinkled throughout... words really do not do it justice. Some of the forested hillsides (there were only a few) reminded me of back home in New England, There is a lot of poverty in Brazil and this is very apparent in the sprawling slums of Brazil's large cities as well as the isolated farms I was passing. It was obvious some of the farm homes had no electricity and the closest toilet and running water was the nearby steam or river.
The bus ride went perfectly and was extremely comfortable, maybe a little cold even due to the air conditioning. I tried to take a couple of naps but it was difficult to keep my eyes closed with all this scenery passing by my window. The bus was never more than half-full. In all, it was not what I expected, and I would do it again (I have to on the way back anyhow!).
Felipe met me off the bus and has been a very friendly, gracious host. He has a nice apartment here in the city with five other roommates. The little I have seen of Belo Horizonte thus far has not made a favorable impression, but I still have much to see.We rested for a bit at Felipe's before heading out for the night to a gay club called "Joselyn." We stayed until 4:00am with two of his friends and I danced for most of it. Felipe got pretty trashed so I spent the last half-hour making sure he was okay. The club was nice - a lot like the club "Move" we went to in Vitoria. The crowd was decent as well, especially for a Thursday night. When we arrived back home it was right to bed for the both of us, while outside the sound of crowing roosters could be heard.
Felipe is at school now and I'm dealing with an issue with my bank account. It's keeping me busy to say the least.. I think I am going to take a nap now.
