Rocked the house. There’s no other phrase to describe what Ben Folds did Wednesday night at Princeton’s McCarter Theater. Well, I guess there are other phrases. Stunningly brilliant. Extremely funny. A case of the sniffles (poor Ben had a cold). However you want to describe him, it’s very likely that you’ve never seen anyone pound a piano the way Mr. Folds can (think Jerry Lee Lewis). Read on for more about his magnificent performance, and also about up-and-coming openers Miniature Tigers. Let’s start with those Miniature Tigers, who kicked the show off with an exceptional 6-or-so-songs. They swept through tracks from their new release, ... Read Full Story

I think he might be the answer. Opening the show with a mix of "real" and "fake" songs (for an explanation of "real" and "fake" read " Ben Folds: Rockin the City, and the Suburbs )" from ... MUSIC NEWS - Epic Records has announced the release of BEN FOLDS PRESENTS: UNIVERSITY A CAPPELLA! on April 28, 2009. Folds was amazed when he discovered the number of colleges that have active a cappella groups on campus (1,200 in the US alone), so, on top of this, how many of them love to cover his songs, Folds decided to produce a record with the best of these performances. There are a few key things you should know about NBC's a capella singing competition show "The Sing-Off," which premiered Monday night (December 14). First, it's not very good. Unless you're one of those people who are super-enthusiastic about the Whiffenpoofs, singing groups get pretty grating after a few minutes — even the good ones. [...]

It's always disheartening when you see musical heroes of your teens and twenties face the reality of the current state of the music biz, because the results are never pretty. 2009 HAS BEEN A BIG YEAR for a cappella music: Ben Folds enlisted collegiate groups to cover his songs, the vocal sextet Sonos came out with a major-label album and Anoop Desai, alumnus of UNC's Clef Hangers, placed sixth on American Idol. (Express has also highlighted a cappella groups covering the songs of U2, Tori Amos, and Coldplay.) But even bigger than all of that is "The Sing-Off," a new NBC reality show that pits eights a cappella...
