Benicio Del Toro Will Not Be in Star Trek 2, But Khan Might Be

Benicio Del Toro
Casting an actor in a film is a long and convoluted process, however in the case of Star Trek 2 it’s even more convoluted then normal!  For some time now the name of Latino actor Benicio Del Toro has been the one on everyone’s lips as the man to play the villain in the next Star Trek film, not least by us (you can read all our Star Trek coverage here).  The smart money was on him playing an incarnation of the legendary Khan Noonien Singh from the original Star Trek II.  Recently JJ Abrams himself strongly denied that fact, and it turns out he was right, Del Toro won’t be Khan in Star Trek 2, he won’t be anyone!  Yes it now seems that Del Toro won’t actually be in the film at all, which is something of a shock for those of us who had him pinned down as a sure thing.  Allegedly it’s over a monetary disagreement, but that’s something of a catch-all term in these circumstances.  However to give that news one more tiny little twist it’s also being reported that Khan definitely will be the villain after all!  So the casting saga continues, Alice Eve & Peter Weller are signed on now so they definitely will be in the film, but it seems unlikely that Weller will be playing the lead.  Indeed his role has been reported as being an older, mentor like role, there to support the main big bad.  So it seems we’re right back where we started with this story now, needless to say as soon as we hear anything more on this we’ll bring it to you here.
