Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin put Russia back on the map in Ice Dancing, as they won their first ice dancing gold at the World Championships. This was their first medal at Worlds and the first for a Russian couple in four years. Domnina and Shabalin’s performance, which was to Khatchaturian’s “Spartacus,” may not have been the most emotional dance of the night, but it was a difficult program and the Russians delivered. After working with Marina Zoueva and Igor Shpilband for 10 years, Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto will begin training with Natalia Linichuk and Gennadi Karponosov at the IceWorks Skating Complex in Aston, PA. Hard to imagine Tanith and Ben not in Detroit but I guess change is sometimes needed. However, if you're going to change coaches they didn't pick bad ones! The duo has coached champions such as two-time Olympic champions Oksana Grishuk and Evgeny Platov, two-time World champions Anjelika Krylova and Oleg Ovsiannikov, and two-time World champions Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviski (pre murder trial!). The Americans give an electrifying performance in ice dancing but finish behind Russians Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin. Tanith Belbin wore elegant red and Ben Agosto was in white jacket, black pants and red tie Friday night at Staples Center. The music for their free dance was Puccini's "Tosca," and after they flew across the ice drawing loud applause for synchronized turns and lifts that seemed geometrically impossible, Belbin grabbed Agosto around the neck, tears in her eyes. I was voting for Taninth Belbin and Benjamin Agosto to win the gold in the 2008 World Championships. Unfortunately they made a rare fall in compulsories. They were fourth overall. This is the first time that the Americans were out of the podium in any competition since 2004. Read Full Story

World Figure Skating Championship has already started. It is being held in Sweden. China’s Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao lead the pair’s short program followed by the Germans Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy. Russia’s Yuko Kawaguchi and Alexander Smirnov were third. France’s Isabelle Delobel and Olivier Schoenfelder leads in ice dance. American favorites Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto were in fifth place after a fall in the compulsory. “It’s just a freak accident.
