It pays to play a cop on television. Benjamin Bratt says that his four-year stint playing Detective Rey Curtis on the fake cop show Law & Order has given him some very real immunity.

While talking about his new indie film La Mission, Bratt told the New York Daily News: “If I get stopped making an illegal left turn or maybe for exceeding the speed limit I’ll hand over my ID, and when the police see the clean-shaven face on the license, they say, ‘Hey, Curtis, just slow it down next time, will you? And can I have an autograph?’”

Benjamin played the strict, conservative Detective Curtis from 1995 to 1999 across from actor Jerry Orbach, who played Detective Lennie Briscoe in the cop drama.

Bratt's new movie, La Mission tells the story of an ultra-macho San Francisco bus driver who has to deal with his gay son coming out of the closet.
