Chief: Did you root for Kate Winslet at the Oscars? Except for Meryl Streep, who were the other nominees? Joking. Of course I know. But the point is, did anyone even have a chance? Come on. If it wasn't Winslet, it was going to be Streep. No doubt about it.
The Reader. I read this novel years ago, when I used to follow Oprah's bookclub. 1999 to be exact. Geez, I can't even find my book... who did I lend it to? Give it back!!! The story is very nostalgic of a man's younger days, a coming of age story with a mystery attached to it. Kate Winslet plays Hanna Schmitz, a german tram (cable car) conductor who has an affair with a 15 year old Michael Berg, played by David Kross as a teen and Ralph Fiennes as an adult. The affair only lasts a summer, but a lifetime in Michael's memory. Years later, while Michael is in law school (still played by Kross), he sits in a trial and sees Hanna Schmitz, his ex-lover, on trial for war crimes. It is only then that Michael discovers her secret, a secret that could set her free but she chooses to keep quiet. Ralph Fiennes plays the older Michael Berg, thinking of his past and making active decisions to remedy his past choices.
If I keep going, I will be revealing the ending, and I really don't want to do that to you. The movie is definitely worth watching, if not only for Winslet's winning performance, for the story itself. The novel is a good read and I must say, the film does the book justice. Kate Winslet's performance is remarkable.
