Griffin’s Not Doing Dunk Contest?

I understand Blake Griffin’s sentiment, but, back in the day, these things never stopped Wilkins, Jordan, and other big stars from doing the  Slam Dunk Contest.  If the All-Star weekend is for the fans, they want to see the most vicious dunker in the game throw down some garbage.  However, they can’t see that if the guy thinks that he’d rather not do it anymore.  Check out Griffin’s reasoning for not doing the contest.

“As of right now I don’t plan on being in it.  Those dunk contests aren’t my thing, I said that last year. There’s a lot of guys that can put on a great show and do some good stuff.”

“Last year was hectic and it kind of made it unenjoyable.  So this year, we’ll see what will happen, but I will try to tone it down a bit and get a break instead of being so busy.”

Ok, I know it was hectic, etc.  But, could you just be honest with us for one second?  Just say that you don’t want to hurt yourself, you feel you’re a little bit too big of a star now, or you just plain don’t feel like it.  This sounds like you’re trying to manufacture an excuse so that you don’t have to do something because you just don’t feel like it.  It’s kind of like laziness for pro athletes.  Just do the doggone contest and put down one major dunk.  You’re defending your title.  Doesn’t that bring you any kind of personal pride in how good you are?

Eh, I don’t know.  I just feel like we’ve gotten a little bit too prissy for our own good in the NBA.  Just do the contest and stop complaining about things being hectic or “unenjoyable.”  Boohoo, you’re a millionaire athlete.  Unenjoyable?

Yeah, right.
