Lake Misurina

One of the iconic Italian ski resorts Cortina d’Ampezzo grew up almost parallel to famous St.Moritz in Austria, which actually was a model to follow for Cortina and many of other established today ski resorts in Europe. Some 160 years ago British and German travellers discovered the charm of Dolomites. The base for their hiking became the small Ladine village Cortina, which in following years, due to new road Alemagna and train connection with Venice and Milano became a popular place for multinational tourists and Austrian aristocracy. At the beginning of 20th century over a dozen modern hotels received several thousands of guests a year. Unfortunately both World Wars splashed the ink on an idyllic picture of the young resort. The military forts near Cortina that witnessed severe fights over Dolomites during the First World War are today part of ski tour Giro della Grande Guerra.
