Beyonce's "Single Ladies" video is great – according to Kanye, it's one of the "best videos of all time," after all – and it's inspired countless interpretations. Bet she never saw this one coming though. A recent YouTube video shows girls, not even yet in their preteens, grooving to the pop star's tune, wearing ensembles that many find to be way too skimpy.
A screen shot from the YouTube video. (From YouTube.com) Young girls said to be seven years old and dressed in two-piece dance outfits reminiscent of groups like the Pussycat Dolls dance and gyrate to "Single Ladies" in choreography inspired by the original video. The routine has been dropping jaws as news networks such as Fox and CNN run the video for viewers at home.
While the video, and the girls' parents, have been harshly criticized by almost everyone who has seen the video, two of the parents spoke with Inside Edition to defend themselves.
"People have made comments about how the music video is inappropriate...Our girls haven't seen the Beyonce music video. What they have seen is the Chipettes do it in the Alvin and the Chipmunks movie," one girl's mother said.
"[These girls] are 8 and 9 years old and they have a passion and they work very hard to improve their technique...and they're completely supported by their families, their friends," she adds. "It's a very family-oriented activity...and their accomplishments are being overshadowed by people who are taking this out of context, looking at a costume that is worn on a competition stage for two minutes when the girl is competing as if those girls were walking around, going to school in those costumes."
