Chhaya, a resident of Sarangpur town in Rajgarh district, consumed sulphos tablets (an insecticide ) yesterday, her parents said. Or almost. Switch on for the Large Hadron Collider at CERN is due to happen on 10 September, 2008, marking the beginning of a physics experiment which intends to recreate conditions last seen a trillionth of a second after the Big Bang. The experiment involves smashing particles together in a 27 km ring, built 100m underground on the French-Swiss border. Racing at 99.99 per cent of the speed of light, particles will collide at the heart of massive detectors, allowing scientists a fleeting glimpse of tiny subatomic particles which may answer fundamental questions about the building blocks of nature. As the universe was forming, ... Read Full Story

After a much heralded start on September 10, the world’s largest particle collider, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), has been taken down for “a minimum of two months” according to a press statement issued by the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN .   When the experiment was launched on Sept. 10, scientists circled a beam of protons in a clockwise direction at the speed of light, then shut the collider down and turned on a counterclockwise beam. Scientists said the beam made several hundred circuits around the 27-kilometer long underground ring.   On Sept. 11, scientists had succeeded in controlling the counterclockwise beam ...   Apparently even conducting what is arguably the biggest experiment in the world is not bereft of security threats. The London Telegraph reports that hackers mounted an attack on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), got past its defence in depth strategy, and successfully hijacked Cern's website at smsmon.cern.ch, put up a page title "Greek Security Team" and referenced the hacking organization 2600. Half a dozen foreign files were also uploaded to the giant, nearly $8bn atom-smasher's computers. WOW . This all began Wednesday afternoon, as the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment to detect the Higgs particle; which is responsible for mass, began and follows ... Read Full Story

When I first saw the phrase “printing your toast,” I immediate thought of Sheldon in The Big Bang Theory. In one episode, he was meticulously toasting slices of bread, which came out with a Cyclon “printed” on one side. (I actually thought it was Darth Vader, but according to Big Bang Theory fans [...]

"The Maternal Congruence" is just an odd episode of The Big Bang Theory on a lot of levels. The structure of it is all over the place, as if the show that's usually content to inflate sketches into stories on a weekly basis suddenly started to try to tell a bunch of different stories at once. The character relationships are solid, but there's also a sense that some things are happening just because the writers need them to happen to further...

"The Vengeance Formulation" might be my favorite Big Bang Theory so far this season. It didn't have any single plotline that was as sustained in hilarity as last week's Sheldon and Penny extravaganza, but both plotlines were warmly funny, both treated the characters as actual human beings, and both managed to - gasp! - continue with plots introduced in previous episodes. I think I've said before that The Big Bang Theory is a very good show...
