The Big Bang Theory follows the lives of four ‘geeks’ and their neighbour Penny as all of them struggle to fit in. Leonard Hofstadter is seen as the leader of the group as he is slightly less socially inept than the rest of them. Leonard is slightly frustrated within his group as he fits in perfectly with them but would love to be accepted more by other groups of people too. Leonard also has a huge thing for the groups neighbour Penny.
Penny lives next door to the group and slightly intimidates them because she is good looking, blunt and very witty. Penny isn’t the smartest girl but she knows how to speak to people and acts as a middleman for the group. Penny’s dream is to become an actress but as that hasn’t happened yet she currently works as a waitress. Although Penny and the group make an odd pairing, she has a soft spot for them as they look after her somewhat.
Sheldon has the highest IQ out of the group and also likes to point out his two PHDs and Master’s degree. Although Sheldon is super intelligent, he doesn’t understand when people use sarcasm or when certain things upset people. Sheldon enjoys being a geek and is happy within his own world and sees no reason to broaden his horizons. Sheldon is also very egotistical and enjoys pointing out errors made by the others.
Rajesh Koothrappali or Raj as he is known by the group has a PHD and People Magazine named him in their 30 under 30 to watch. Raj enjoys astronomy and likes women but has a lot of trouble speaking to them when not intoxicated. Because of this Raj has spoken very little to Penny despite seeing her every day.
Then there is Howard who doesn’t live with the group but spends most of his time with them anyway. Unlike the rest, Howard doesn’t have a PHD and so he has to put up with mocking mostly from Sheldon who sees him as inferior. Howard is a self-proclaimed ladies’ man even though his attempts to attract women are usually inappropriate and offensive.
