I’m stepping in for a vacationing Todd tonight, revisiting my old Big Bang Theory stomping grounds. Even though I stopped being the point-man for BBT coverage during the off-season—largely because I felt like I’d said about all I had to say about the show—I’ve still been watching this third season, and enjoying it. This season has only provided one all-time classic—“The Creepy Candy Coating Corollary,” which could well be the best BBT episode...  

Most of my favorite comedies use language in some inventive and interesting way. Think about 30 Rock’s flights of verbal fancy (and how the show hilariously undercuts them with lines like "I want to go to there") or the way that the gang on How I Met Your Mother seems to have its own secret code that we’re somehow a part of. I think what has always set Sheldon Cooper apart for me on The Big Bang Theory is the way that his words always seem so...  

The best traditional sitcoms are based around predictability and inevitability. Since all humor contains an element of the unpredictable to it, this sounds like it shouldn’t work, but it does. When you’re doing a continuing comedy series with continuing characters, most of the humor stems from the characters and how they interact with each other. Let’s talk comic timing. One of the things I’ve never quite liked about The Big Bang Theory is the way that Raj’s inability to talk to women feels like a plot device from a comic book the guys might love. It’s, essentially, Popeye, with alcohol standing in for spinach and talking to women standing in for physical strength. But the central device is just so weak – how has Raj gone this long without having to work with a woman in any capacity...  

The perils of being a TV critic on the West Coast are many, but chief among them is the fact that by the time you see something, virtually everyone else in the country also has. This usually means that some sort of advanced perception of the episode has filtered into your brain and caused you to set your expectations way too high or way too low. After a while, you get used to it enough to just sort of filter all of that out, but every so often...  

We've already seen Summer Glau (Firefly, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) and now Wesley Crusher himself, Wil Wheaton (Star Trek: The Next Generation). How do you improve on that? How about one of the babes from Battlestar Galactica?

Like a stray dog that works his way into your heart, I think I've fallen in love with The Middle. I didn't want to get so attached, because -- quite frankly -- ABC's track record for sticking with quality shows isn't so great. I'm still mourning Pushing Daisies. But The Middle is nothing like Pushing Daisies, nor does it fall into the quirky, clever mode of other shows that ABC has been promulgating for years. Ugly Betty is quirky. Better off...
